The Noise of Life
The concrete slab of our friend’s new home sat idle for months, then, one day, stacks of lumber showed up—and it got really noisy.
My patio is just 50 yards away, so you can imagine what happened to my morning quiet time. Then, I realized this is a picture of life:
The desire for something good, but the distractions and noise of life get in the way.
As a follower of Christ, setting aside quiet time with God is vital. Protecting that time from interruptions is a good thing.
But sometimes the noise of life simply cannot be avoided. And perhaps that’s when I need to turn to the Lord the most.
I’m discovering that resting in God’s peace and presence is not found only in the serene mornings of life. His presence is with me in the noise, too—if I turn to Him.
The Noise of Life
Finding God’s Peace and Presence in the Middle of Life’s Noise
My soul it longs for quiet with You
Yet noises ring from boisterous crew
A quiet invaded, clanking sounds
I must now hold my sacred ground!
/
With all these noises left and right
I shall persist with all my might
Standing firm for what I need
Time to pray, a Book to read
/
With all this noise and busyness
I yearn for peace and no more stress!
I want to pray, just not sure how
Should I strive and make a vow?
Should I somehow block it out?
Or sit and stew, frown or pout?
/
But now I see my heart is weak
My will to fight has hit its peak
I must now call on God alone
Who brings to me His true shalom.
/
And then my mind found gratitude
Not my former attitude
Thankful for the place I live
Thankful for the Lord who gives
Grateful for the sounds of life
Grateful for both peace and strife
Thankful that my ears work fine
Thankful for all our food and wine
/
You’re with me in the quiet and loud
A presence gentle as a cloud
This noise of life reminds me of
My constant need for grace above
Ever-present rain or shine
Your Spirit here is life sublime.
