How to serve God without burning out.

Have you ever had a desire to do good things for others and God. If so, great! However, I've found that, over time, the effort to do good works can be exhausting.

Sometimes I wonder if our culture of achievement and activity bleeds over into our spiritual lives.

The poem below suggests that maybe it's not so much what I do "for" Christ, but more about me being "with" Christ. Then, from being with Him, I more effortlessly serve and give.

I pray that God puts the desire in our hearts to be with Him and then to live, serve and give from Him as our source.

WHAT SHALL I DO?

What shall I do for Christ today?

What words to others should I say?

Will I admit when I fall short

And better watch how I comport?

/

Should I respond to those in need

And give great care when others bleed?

Or walk the old across the street?

Or wash the homeless' weary feet?

/

Should I protest and hold a sign

Or skip a meal so others dine?

Will I take in His Word each day?

Will I give tithes along the way?

/

Or should I pray to be set free

And ask for Him to live through me?

Or should I simply sit with Him

To rest a bit or face what's grim?

/

Should I exude His love today

To those that hate and those that stray?

Should I bring peace where justice fails

Or grow in trust as winds prevail?

/

Or should I pause to hear my heart

To seek His hand to find my part?

Then turn and look into His eyes

For in His gaze, my treasure lies!
