The Golden Ring: Why Success Never Fully Satisfies

Early in my career, I was driven by success, having more, being liked, and keeping up with the Joneses.

I reached for the golden ring of success—work, bonuses, recognition—and at times I was successful (as I defined it).

The problem wasn't success itself. It was believing success could give me lasting significance, peace, and satisfaction.

So, inside, I was still unsatisfied. Something was missing.

Today, I still hear a whisper that urges me toward success, accomplishment, and attainment…as theway to satisfaction.

The Golden Ring and Success vs Significance

A man can have most anything

If he grabs the golden ring

But he must hold it ever tight

With all his will and all his might

/

And if the ring begins to slip

All the things held by his grip

Will fade away like morning dew

And make him question what is true.

/

But could a better ring be found?

One that never lets you down?

A ring that’s yours through thick or thin

That stays close by, like next of kin?

/

There is a ring that does just that!

Its grace restores when dreams fall flat

/

This ring is one you’ll never lose

For weary souls, it does renew!

So choose with care what you pursue

For pain will test if things are true

/

For every life will face some fire

Where friends and dreams may near expire

But if you reach for Jesus Christ

You’ll find the Pearl of greatest price.
