A Mother’s Calming Love Brings Rest
God Invites Us to Rest
"I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother."
Psalm 131:2
This psalm is about a restful, calm trust in God.
It uses the image of a weaned child to make the point. A weaned child is no longer restless and anxious for the mother's milk. She no longer fidgets and strives but is satisfied and rests quietly in her mother's arms.
What a beautiful image of resting and trusting in God, reflected in the mother holding her child. The child is safe, full, and content.
Are these words reflective of your own life?
Are you content or restless?
Are you empty and seeking, or are you full?
Do you feel safe in God's care?
In this verse, the child has moved past being frantic (like many of us) and has settled.
The calm described here is an inner calm, an emotional contentment, and a lack of striving.
A mother's trusting love uniquely strengthens her struggling child, and her passion provides security and care. Her presence calms the child, just as God's presence calms our anxious souls. Her heart teaches the child what safe feels like.
A mother's love reflects God's eternal, caring love. Although it fails at times, it can be relied upon in any circumstance.
In your life, take comfort in this motherly image. It points us to a God who is trusting and always reliable.
Trusting Him helps us move from striving to calm trusting, from noise to stillness, and from fear to settled peace.
May we honor the great women in our lives today who have comforted us and provided that kind of care and strength.
Reflection
Where is God leading you to rest in Him more?
A final thought for a mother’s love in our present or past
This week, we’ve seen how a mother’s love protects, comforts, remembers, guides, speaks wisdom, and brings peace. Each one is a reflection—a glimpse—of the heart of God.
I pray that you are able to see God more clearly in the love you have seen or known in your mother or another woman.
Seek the Lord in prayer and God’s Word if you have these questions:
What does Psalm 131:2 mean?
What does it mean to be like a weaned child?
How can I find rest in God?
Why do I feel restless and anxious?
What does the Bible say about peace and contentment?
How does God calm our hearts?
