A Mother’s Guiding Love Reflects God’s Heart
The Gentle Guidance of a Mother
"It was I who taught Ephraim to walk…I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love.”
Hosea 11:3–4
In this passage, we celebrate the guiding love and tender heart of a mother for her young child.
Hosea wrote chapter 11 between 755 and 742 BC, as the people of God wandered yet again. Israel's northern kingdom (Ephraim) was prosperous outwardly but spiritually unfaithful to God as they practiced idolatry and ignored God's covenant.
And what was God's reaction?
Rebuke?
No.
Instead of saying, "My people rebelled," He remembers Ephriam as a loving mother would, saying, "My child has wandered."
What a loving and affectionate way to remember and speak of your child.
This affectionate tone is how God speaks to us. His voice is loving and compassionate.
In this passage, God recalls how He taught the young kingdom of Ephriam to walk in righteousness and how He lovingly guided them.
But, despite that, Ephraim turns away. That too is a picture of us.
The style of Hosea 11 is both sad and heartbreaking, like that of a mother whose child has wandered. The passage is tender and kind-hearted as a mother recalls her early days with her child.
This beautiful imagery highlights God's compassionate heart toward His children.
And it's a reflection of a mother's heart for her child.
Like that mother, God wants to call you home, and His heart aches to see any of his children pull away. Today, we celebrate His tender compassion and the mothers among us who guide, care, and show compassion.
